Dayton, Ohio (November 19, 2021) - Premier Health's Miami Valley Hospital recently completed its 100th Monarch™ Platform case, a milestone in technology for the early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. The Monarch™ platform is a robotic bronchoscopy that enables pulmonologists to navigate and search for subtle, distant branches of the lungs, and obtain tissue samples from hard-to-reach nodules for biopsy.

The 100th Monarch™ platform case was completed at Miami Valley Hospital on Thursday, November 18th by Murthy Gollamudi, MD, an intensive care and pulmonary disease specialist at Lung and Intensive Care Consultants.

"This recent achievement provides a more promising future for our lung cancer patients," said Dr. Gollamudi. "The Monarch™ platform provides our team with better vision, scope, and control to see what's inside the patient's airway."

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, partly because it has no symptoms in its early stages. With the increase in lung cancer screening, the nodules found tend to be smaller and more difficult to touch, which makes early diagnosis and treatment difficult.

Launched in August 2020, Miami Valley Hospital is the first hospital in Ohio to use the Monarch™ platform, which integrates robotics, software, data science, and endoscopy (using small cameras and tools through natural openings). The purchase funds were raised by the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation.

"Without the generosity of the community, this achievement would not have been possible," said Soumitra Sen, MD, critical care and pulmonary specialist at Lung and Critical Care Consultants. Purchase this cutting-edge technology to provide more treatment options for cancer patients close to home. "

The Monarch™ platform utilizes a familiar controller-like interface that doctors use to navigate the flexible robotic endoscope to the periphery of the lungs. The Monarch™ platform combines traditional endoscopic views of the lungs with computer-aided navigation based on the 3D model of the patient's own lung anatomy, providing doctors with continuous bronchoscopy vision throughout the process.
